Summer Course with (A review)

Michelle from Ranganna got in contact with me just before the summer holidays and asked me to review one of their online summer courses. I was delighted as I had planned on doing an Irish course this summer as I’ll be moving to 5th class in September. Since graduating in 2011, I have taught 5th class, after that I went to England for a year, then I returned and worked as a resource teacher followed by a 3rd class teacher and last year as a resource teacher again. While my standard of Irish would be relatively good, I felt I needed to brush up on it over the summer and the Ranganna summer course certainly helped.

The course I completed was; Gaeilge Phraiticiúil do Mhúinteoirí Bunscoile – Rang 5 agus 6 (2017)

Course Layout

The course was divided into the themes of the Irish curriculum – I think this is the most effective way to teach Irish.

  • Mé Féin
  • Sa bhaile
  • Bia
  • Siopadóireacht
  • Caitheamh Aimsire
  • An Teilifís
  • An Aimsir
  • Éadaí
  • An Scoil
  • Ócáidí Speisialta

Each unit offers vocabulary and useful sentences/phrases for the theme along with the ‘Feidhmeanna Teanga’ and the grammar for each theme.

The course teaches the main grammar points and then there is a mini ‘assessment’ – usually tick the box/fill in the blanks which is a great way to check if you know the rules.

There is also a ‘Cómhra/Rólimirt’ at the end of each unit. These are brilliant as they give you a clear idea of the level of Irish to expect from children when they finish a topic/theme.

At the end of each unit, there are other activities or ideas for the classroom shared. I particularly liked this idea – each child has a table as you can see below which focuses on Name, Age, Appearance, Home and Family. A number of sections are missing from each table so the children have to ask one another questions to ‘fill in the blanks’ on their sheet. In the below example the child would have to ask ‘Cén aois í Amelia?’ etc.

Overall I found the course very beneficial and would highly recommend it! It was a great way for me to brush up on my Irish for the coming year and to revise some of the key grammar points. It also gave me lots of ideas for use in the classroom.
