Fractions, Decimals and Percentages – Word Problems

I’ve just finished this new resource looking at word problems involving fractions, decimals and percentages. I’m planning on using this resource in my classroom next week as a way for children to use their knowledge in real life word problems.

These word problems focus on tourist attractions in some cities around the world including Rome, Florence, New York, London, Brighton, Kerry, Milan etc. The problems focus on money and increasing/decreasing prices etc. (There are 10 problems in total)

I plan on using these as a revision Maths lesson but they would also be perfect as a problem solving station activity.

Overview of the lesson:

As an introduction to the lesson I will use my matching Fractions, Decimals and Percentages resource and randomly give one to each child. The children will then have to find their partners (those with matching fraction/decimal/percentage).

The children will then work in groups of 3 to solve the problems. I haven’t decided yet but we will either;

• Each group will work on the same problem at the same time and a 5 minute timer will be set. (An extension activity of trying to solve the question in a different way will be used for any groups that finish quickly)
• Each group will get one question and when they complete the problem they will then swap with another group.

To conclude the lesson we will answer the questions and talk through different approaches/strategies used.
